DTC Family Spotlight | Mike Cooper

October 9, 2024

At DTC, we believe our strength lies in our people. Today, we’re excited to introduce you to Mike Cooper, our Senior Systems Engineer, as part of our Family Spotlight Series. Mike’s journey in IT and his dedication to problem-solving embody the values that drive our company forward.

The Path to Systems Engineering

Mike’s fascination with technology began during his freshman year at Loyola University Maryland. Initially enrolled as an undecided major in the Sellinger School of Business, a simple assignment to create a Pong game ignited his passion for IT.

“I was fascinated with the assignment,” Mike recalls. “When I later took my first Management Information Systems course, I knew this was the major for me.”

For Mike, systems engineering wasn’t just a career choice—it was a natural progression driven by his love for technology and the constant challenge it provides. “I enjoy the IT field because it constantly challenges me to think critically and solve complex problems,” he explains.

Joining the DTC Family

Mike’s journey to DTC is a testament to the power of networking and the importance of company culture. When faced with a layoff due to his previous company’s transition to cloud computing, a friend’s thoughtful gesture led him to DTC.

“I felt an immediate connection to DTC,” Mike shares. “I could see myself working with everyone I met in the interview process, and DTC’s family-first values were very important to me.”

The Evolution of Systems Engineering

Having witnessed the field’s transformation firsthand, Mike offers valuable insights into how systems engineering has evolved:

  1. Virtualization and Cloud Solutions: From physical servers to cloud-based infrastructure.
  2. Internet Evolution: From basic browsing and email to a integral part of daily life and business operations.
  3. Security Focus: Security has become a top priority in modern systems engineering.
  4. Mobile Revolution: The advent of smartphones has changed how we approach system design.

“Modern systems engineers have to think of security first and foremost,” Mike emphasizes. “Instead of local solutions, you are building cloud solutions that work from anywhere.”

Beyond the Code

Mike’s approach to engineering is influenced by his life outside of work. An avid sports enthusiast and exercise buff, he finds that physical activities often provide mental clarity for tackling complex engineering challenges.

“A long bike ride is a great place to think about how to tackle a challenging engineering project,” he says.

His DIY attitude at home also mirrors his professional critical thinking skills. “I like to try and understand how things work and fix things around the house before replacing or calling in a professional. It utilizes the same troubleshooting skills that I apply in my role as a systems engineer.”

Mike Cooper’s journey from a curious college student to a seasoned Senior Systems Engineer at DTC, showcases the evolving nature of IT and the importance of adaptability in this field. His story reflects DTC’s commitment to fostering a culture of continuous learning, problem-solving, and family values.
